The children in Year 1 have really been enjoying this terms topic: Houses and Homes. It has been very hands on and the children have had great fun being mini architects! All the children have worked very hard on designing and making some fantastic models of different kinds of home, these are now on display outside the classroom if anyone would like to come and admire them.
Year 1 have looked at homes in their locality, explored the influences of time and have considered what materials houses can be made from. This part of the topic was particularly brought to life with an exciting trip to Churchtown village and of course we had to visit the chocolate shop while we were there.
The children have travelled back in time and looked at houses through the ages: and all thoroughly enjoyed work on castles and dressing up for a Royal Banquet Ball with medieval dancing, a jousting tournament and a huge feast. As well as looking at local types of home Year 1 have also looked at homes around the world, they have compared the features and have had a special guest speaker in to talk about homes in Africa!
Our Science work in this Topic has been about electricity around the home and the children had great fun making their own light-up picture boards of lighthouses. Year 1 have also been studying animal homes and have been fascinated looking at the different habitats around the world.
They have recently done some fabulous artwork on the different animal habitats using crayons and watercolour paints. The children are now looking forward to being nature detectives and investigating the school grounds for different animal homes, they will spend time studying what happens in these homes and will take and sketch lots of pictures.
